The Dr. David G. Hurr
CHAMPION FUND 2011

“I was a father to the needy, and champion to abused strangers.”   - Job 29:16

About Dr. Dave
Dr. David Glen Hurr passed away on August 9, 2011 at the age of 69, surrounded by family. He was born in Baytown, Texas on December 18, 1941, to Glen Pierce Hurr and Nettie Beaugh Hurr. He grew up in Baytown and resided there until he moved to Liberty, Texas in 1972, where he resided until his death.

While growing up, David spent time working in the family grocery store, the Hurr's Food Market, and enjoyed shrimping, fishing, and water skiing on the bay and hunting at the original Hurr family homestead in Rock Island, Texas. He graduated magna cum laude from Robert E. Lee High School in 1960. He went on to attend Lee College, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1962. He then attended University of Texas School of Dentistry where he graduated in 1966, then pursued a specialty degree in orthodontics. David opened his orthodontics practice, in 1969, at the Hurr Dental Office at 7912 Bayway Drive in Baytown where he practiced for 42 years until his death. Dr. Dave prided himself in providing individualized and personal care.

David was an avid gun and bow enthusiast and outdoorsman and spent many happy hours bow hunting. He loved music, enjoyed dancing and reading, and was a skilled whistler. He was an active member of the Fountain of Faith Fellowship Church in Baytown. David (also known as "Ga-Ga" by his grandchildren) was an adoring and doting grandfather; his grandchildren gave him much comfort through his battle with cancer. He was an intelligent, vivacious man, with a larger than life personality.

Letter from Cassy Smith, Director of The Champion Fund:

My family and I met Dr. Dave in December of 1999, when we were given the honor of becoming his pastors.  Dr. Dave was very much a faithful friend to all who knew him. One such friend was our young adults/Inside Out leader, Charity. He always wanted to know how “Miss Charity” was now that she was “MRS.” That was part of the last conversation I held with him sitting at Cracker Barrel the week after his mother’s funeral. My parents and I had just finished eating when he arrived to have a quick dinner after work. We invited him to come sit with us, and enjoyed a wonderful conversation that included a fascinating story on all the medical research he’d been doing, as well as, what Charity was up to in Haiti.

Here’s a little about Charity’s Story:
In late 2010, Charity traveled on her first medical missions trip to Haiti. Not only did Haiti steal her heart, but also a young man who manages base operations and works in aviation with Samaritan’s Purse. Seth and Haiti had won Charity, and following a whirlwind romance, engagement, and a wedding she was on a plane honey-moonin’ in a country devastated by poverty and natural disasters. Over 85% of the country is unemployed. This past month, Charity & Seth visited an orphanage “Jesus’ Name”. They were there with the team to celebrate and surprise them with plans to build them a building. In true celebration they had a plate of yummy brownies and as courtesy Charity asked the director of Jesus’ Name Orphange, if they needed to wait till supper was served. To her heartbreak, he answered that there was no money for supper that night.

And that brings us to where we are today. Every “Family Day” at FOF, Dr. Dave was always making sure there was more than enough food...usually leading to him and a few other men putting together a few bucks and sending one of the young men to buy more fried chicken. Hearing his family share at the memorial service this was a trait he possessed, always making sure everyone had what was needed. He also possessed a deep desire to gather all the knowledge he could on various subject matters. He liked that no matter what the subject was he would be prepared with an opinion, and if he didn’t have one then he would go study so that next time he would. He loved to learn, and encouraged young people to thirst for wisdom and understanding, especially about the things of God.

Job 29:16 states, “I was a father to the poor; and the cause which I knew not I searched out.” In one translation it says “I was a father to the needy, and champion to abused strangers.”

In memory of the life of Dr. Dave, we have created the Dr. David G. Hurr Champion Fund. Funding school supplies and stocking food pantries so that children can be better prepared to take on life free from worries and full of hope!

You can email me at TheBaytownChurch@gmail.com to become a Champion for an orphan today and meet the needs of those adults who are in the field fighting for their freedom from poverty!
